Netherlands backs resolution to “retain” international students

• Netherlands Coalition parties have embraced a resolution at the very heart of the evolution that aims to keep international students in the Netherlands after graduation. This venture is in response to a recent drain of skilled international workers, and it corresponds with the nation's other long-term economic desires. In January 2025, a motion backed by three coalition parties requested that the government propose a plan to entice international students and talent to stay in the Netherlands after their studies. 

• This is in reaction to indications from the Immigration and Naturalisation Service that the influx of skilled international workers is dwindling-a decrease that some are calling a terrible development for the Dutch economy. While the rejection of other policies previously comes from an intent to defrost internationalization, this resolution indicates an acknowledgment of how international graduates stand to contribute positively to extant Dutch economic activity. 

• International students now make up about one-sixth of the entire student population in Dutch universities and chart an enrollment number of 128,000. Soaring growth has been checked down to a minor 5.4 percent in the academic year of 2023 to 2024.
