Academic Search Identifies Key Competencies for College Presidents
Top education executives often identify traits like trustworthiness and resilience as crucial for their presidencies. The ever-changing demands on college presidents, such as political polarization, campus unrest, demographic changes, and financial constraints, have driven the search for key skills. The authors of a report outlined seven key competencies for the college presidency: trust-building, demonstrating resilience, communication savvy, team building, emotional intelligence, leadership with courage, and data acumen and resource management. These competencies relate to how presidents interact with their teams and the broader constituencies of a college campus. Building trust involves involving internal stakeholders in decision-making processes, minimizing surprises, supporting shared governance, and aligning actions with personal and institutional values. Resilience, often viewed as mental toughness, is a product of relationships and leaning on teams and networks. Academic Search identified these competencies through a survey of 713 college presidents and four focus groups of over a dozen college leaders.
