Perfect Scores & Mass Improvement: Is India's Medical Entrance Exam Rigged?
Irregularities with India’s medical entrance test sparks row
The NEET UG 2024 results, a significant milestone in the academic journey of thousands of aspiring medical students, saw an unprecedented 67 students achieving All India Rank One. This remarkable feat, however, has raised serious questions about the integrity of the exam. The Education Minister attributed this to syllabus cuts and increased candidates, but concerns were raised when six of the perfect scorers were from the same exam center in Haryana. Additionally, 44 students saw their marks increase from 715 to 720 due to a question with two correct options in the Chemistry exam. A total of 1,563 students received grace marks, leading to inflated scores. The Indian government decided to cancel the scorecards of these students, prompting the Supreme Court to urge a retest option. Reports of paper leaks and malpractices have also surfaced, leading to arrests in Bihar, Gujarat, Delhi, and Rajasthan. The Supreme Court is set to hear fresh petitions seeking the cancellation of NEET UG 2024, with opposition parties and student unions demanding a CBI inquiry and protests. The situation has led to a crisis of confidence in the NTA and the examination system, requiring immediate action to restore integrity.
