Ireland bans 51-week student leases

Ireland has just passed a law prohibiting leases that last for 51 weeks, a step taken to stop students from being compelled to pay for housing during the summer when they might not require it. The updated rule requires that student leases match the academic calendar, usually spanning around 41 weeks, instead of going up to 51 weeks. This adjustment was made in response to issues highlighted by student organizations and schools, who claimed that the old lease system put too much financial pressure on students and their families. The law also sets limits on the initial payments, requiring only one month's rent and deposit, which is designed to reduce the financial burden on students.
The government has stressed that students who need housing over the summer, like international students who decide not to go back home, are still able to arrange longer-term leases with their landlords. This strategy is meant to provide flexibility for those who require it, while also safeguarding the majority of students from unnecessary expenses.
