Indian Universities on the Rise: Second Most Represented in 2024 Rankings
India has surpassed China to become the second-most represented country in the 2024 Times Higher Education Asia University rankings, boasting 91 universities compared to China's 86 institutions. The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, the sole Indian institution in the top 100, has witnessed a significant climb from 48th place in 2023 to 32nd place this year, marking a notable achievement, especially with its collaboration with Rice University in the US.
This shift underscores a broader trend of positive transformations in higher education, moving from the West to the East. Phil Baty, commenting on these developments, emphasized the emergence of excellence in East Asia and South East Asia, extending beyond these regions.
Following Japan, India, Mainland China, and Turkey, Iran ranks fifth with 73 universities represented. Moreover, there is a noteworthy rise in other regional leaders such as Japan and Thailand, indicating continuous advancements in Asian higher education systems amidst heightened competition.
Analyzing the data further, of the 70 Indian universities ranked in both 2023 and 2024, 33 have ascended while 37 have experienced declines in their positions, reflecting the dynamic nature of academic performance and institutional standings.
