India announces $500k in scholarships for Indo-Pacific students
The Quad summit, held in Wilmington, Delaware, announced a new initiative to award fifty scholarships, each worth $500,000, to students from the Indo-Pacific region to pursue a four-year undergraduate engineering program at Government of India-funded technical institutions. Additionally, the program will expand in 2024 to include postgraduate and doctoral students who can study STEM subjects in the US. The Quad Fellowship, facilitated by the Institute of International Education, welcomed its second cohort and expanded to include students from ASEAN countries for the first time. The summit also focused on strengthening ties, building a network of future leaders in science, technology, and policy, and improving maritime capabilities, disaster response, and health initiatives. The Japanese government supports the program, and the private sector, including Google, the Pratt Foundation, and Western Digital, has also pledged support. The summit occurred amid concerns over China's influence and military actions in the Indo-Pacific region.
