India's Presence Grows by 318% Over the Past Decade, Leading All G20 Nations
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has made a significant jump in the QS World University Rankings 2025, climbing 31 places to secure the 118th position, the highest among all Indian higher education institutions. This advancement highlights IIT Bombay's consistent improvements in research quality and reputation. Over the past six years, the institute has notably enhanced its Employer Reputation ranking, moving from 102nd to 63rd, and improved its Citations per Faculty rank from 226th to 116th. Despite these gains, IIT Bombay still needs to enhance its internationalization metrics to achieve its full potential as a globally diverse institution.
Nationally, IIT Bombay also leads in Academic Reputation, ranking 131st in this critical indicator. Between 2018 and 2022, the institute produced 143,800 citations from 15,905 academic papers, reflecting a research growth of approximately 17%. The research primarily focuses on Engineering & Technology and Natural Sciences, with significant contributions in Astrophysics. Impressively, 30% of its research output is published in the top 10% of academic journals by impact, surpassing the global average by 6% and the Indian average by 15%.
Meanwhile, IIT Delhi has also shown remarkable progress, leaping 47 places to reach the 150th position. This substantial improvement underscores the growing influence and academic prowess of Indian institutions on the global stage.
