IIT Madras Revamps BTech Program for Enhanced Flexibility and Innovation
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has revamped its BTech curriculum to make it more flexible and student-friendly, allowing early exits and incorporating recommendations from an Institute Curriculum Task Force. These changes focus on employment, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The updated curriculum offers unprecedented flexibility, interdisciplinary learning, hands-on projects, and entrepreneurship opportunities starting as early as the second year. The total number of credits for the BTech program has been rationalized to reduce wall clock hours from 436 to 400, giving students more time for professional and entrepreneurial exploration.
IIT Madras allows students to choose about 40 percent of their courses, supported by 18 academic departments and numerous advanced research centers, enabling them to explore diverse interests and build unique academic profiles. The institute has introduced features such as an improved first-year experience with extra vacation time, a new ‘recreation’ course, and an Entrepreneurship elective available in the second year. These initiatives aim to foster competence with personality, helping students rediscover the joy of learning. Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), emphasized the curriculum's flexibility, which allows students to maintain a core identity while expressing their uniqueness.
