The University of Birmingham and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have launched a new Joint master's program in Sustainable Energy Systems to train specialists in the rapidly growing field of sustainable energy, crucial for combating climate change. Students will study in both Chennai and Birmingham, culminating in a single degree awarded jointly by both universities. The program includes a substantial individual project within internationally recognized research groups, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. Applications are now open, with offer letters set to be sent out from June 26, 2024.

The program begins at IIT Madras and includes a short industrial placement. Students can choose between two pathways: studying in the UK for 12 months, including a research project in Birmingham, or studying in the UK for six months before returning to IIT Madras to complete the program and a research project. The interdisciplinary course focuses on sustainable energy systems and technologies, covering aspects such as fuel cells, hydrogen, energy storage, solar, and nuclear energy. Delivered by experienced research staff from academia, industry, and policy, the program combines innovative curricula and pedagogical methods from IIT Madras to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of sustainable energy systems.
