IIT Madras Initiates Sports Excellence Admission to Encourage Athlete Students
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has introduced the 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) program starting in the academic year 2024-2025, offering two supernumerary seats in each of its undergraduate programs, with one seat reserved for female students. This initiative makes IIT Madras the first IIT to admit sportspersons into its undergraduate courses, marking a significant step towards integrating sports and academics at a premier technical institution. To qualify for the SEA program, applicants must meet two main criteria: they must qualify for the JEE (Advanced) examination and must have won at least one medal in a national or international sports competition within the last four years. Unlike the traditional admission process managed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), the SEA admissions will be handled through a dedicated portal specifically set up by IIT Madras.
The SEA program aims to foster a balanced student community that excels in both academics and sports, thereby enhancing campus life and setting examples for other students. By attracting and admitting talented sportspersons, IIT Madras seeks to promote a culture of sportsmanship and physical excellence alongside academic prowess. Professor V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, highlighted the broader benefits of integrating sports into the academic environment, noting that sports teach valuable life skills such as discipline, perseverance, and the ability to handle both success and failure. The institute's commitment to supporting sports is further evidenced by its state-of-the-art sports infrastructure and the Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA), which offers advanced sports science education and research facilities. Through the SEA program, IIT Madras hopes to cultivate a new generation of students who are not only academically gifted but also possess the qualities and resilience developed through sports.
