CBSE's New Guidelines on NCERT Textbooks: What Schools Need to Know
CBSE issues guidelines on use of NCERT textbooks in schools, shares amended rules
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released new directives for the employment of NCERT textbooks within educational institutions. These directives are part of a wider initiative aimed at uniformity in educational content and guaranteeing that the instructional materials in schools meet national educational benchmarks. Under the revised regulations, it is recommended that schools utilize NCERT textbooks across all grades 1 to 8, with the exception of supplementary materials that must comply with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) and feature essential discussions, examples, and applications. For grades 9 to 12, the use of NCERT textbooks is compulsory, and it is essential that any supplementary materials are in harmony with the educational goals established by the NCF. These materials are to undergo a thorough examination to eliminate any content deemed offensive or unsuitable. Furthermore, the CBSE has required an annual evaluation of study materials by NCERT to ensure their relevance and currency. This evaluation process will facilitate the necessary adjustments to be implemented prior to the production of textbooks for the upcoming academic year. Educational institutions are also obligated to publicly display the textbooks mandated by them on their websites and to provide a signed statement from the principal and manager, affirming their review of the content. Non-compliance with these directives may lead to punitive measures from the CBSE.
