Canada Ends Policy Allowing Temporary Visitors to Apply for Work Permits
Canada ends temporary visitors applying for work permits
Canada has recently concluded the short-term policy that permitted tourists to seek employment within the nation. This initiative, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020, aimed to tackle the shortage of workers by allowing immigrants in Canada on short-term visas to switch to work permits without having to leave the country. Originally scheduled to lapse in February 2025, the policy was unexpectedly canceled on August 28, 2024, due to worries over its misuse. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported problems with scammers taking advantage of the policy to trick immigrants into entering into illegal employment agreements. This decision is part of a broader strategy to fight against immigration scams and regulate the influx of temporary residents. IRCC will keep handling applications received before the policy's termination under the old regulations. This adjustment is made in conjunction with other limitations designed to decrease the number of foreign employees and control the flow of temporary foreign workers in Canada, indicating a change in the nation's approach to immigration policies post-pandemic.
