Mexico Gets Easier Visa Application Process: 3 New Centers Open
Canada opens up three new visa application centers in Mexico
The expansion of Visa Application Centers (VACs) in Mexico aims to streamline the immigration process for Mexican nationals traveling to Canada. Initially focused on biometric collections, the new VACs will expand their services to include passport transmission and tracking. Despite the reimposition of visa requirements for Mexican nationals due to a surge in asylum claims, Canada emphasizes that Mexican citizens with valid work or study permits can still travel by air with their existing Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). However, those who have an eTA will now require a visitor visa.
The decision to open new VACs is not just a logistical move but a strategic one that could provide more opportunities for Mexican students in different cities nationwide to pursue higher education in Canada. As a key emerging market, Mexico is among Canada's top 10 source countries for international students. Over 16,900 Mexican students held study permits in 2023. This expansion is in line with Canada's 2019 international education strategy, which prioritizes Mexico and other Latin American countries.
Upon receiving their biometric instruction letter, applicants can schedule appointments to provide biometrics at any of the four VAC locations. It's important to note that VACs, managed by private companies under contract with the Government of Canada, do not represent the government, make application decisions, or provide visa-related advice.
