Understanding How Australia's New Visa Rules Affect Indian Students
Australia's New Immigration and Visa Rules: Will They Impact Indian students?
Australia's Migration Strategy for December 2023 has brought about major changes for aspiring Indian students.
- The most significant of these changes is an increase in financial requirements for students and their guardians. This means that students and their guardians will need to provide access to a larger amount of money in Australian Dollars (approximately $29,710 in May 22, 2024) to cover all expenses for the entire period of study. This could be a challenge for some students.
- Additionally, the age limit for the Temporary Graduate visa has been lowered to 35 years or younger, starting July 1, 2024, which could be a problem for older Indian students who were hoping to use this visa for work after their studies.
- The new rules may adjust the length of the Temporary Graduate visas that Indian students typically apply for after they finish their studies in Australia, although details are still being worked out.
- The Skills in Demand (SIV) visa provides an opportunity for recent graduates to obtain permanent residency in Australia if they are able to secure a skilled job in a field that has been identified as in demand by the government of Australia. This is beneficial for Indian students whose qualifications are in line with the skills requirements of Australia.
- The BIIP (Business Innovation and Investment Programme) has been discontinued by the Australian Government, which may have been a consideration for some Indian entrepreneurs. The new National Innovation Visa is expected to be launched later in 2024 but details are not yet known.
