Australia cabinet reshuffle prompts call for installed “refinement”
Previously, the home affairs minister, Clare O'Neil, has been reassigned to the housing and homelessness portfolio. Andrew Giles, the former immigration minister, will now oversee skills and training, though his position has been downgraded from cabinet to the outer ministry. O’Neil's tenure at home affairs was marked by controversy, particularly over changes to the ESOS Act, visa reforms, and a cap on international students. Despite this, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised her communication skills and tasked her with implementing the Homes for Australia plan. Universities Australia and the Group of Eight (Go8) welcomed Giles' appointment to skills and training, emphasizing the need for collaboration to address Australia's skills gap. However, they expressed concerns about the current migration strategy's impact on the international education sector and sought an urgent meeting with the new home affairs minister. Both groups also commended the outgoing skills and training minister, Brendan O’Connor, for his collaborative approach. Albanese noted that the new immigration minister, Burke, with prior experience from 2013, will face a challenging portfolio.
