NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY

In DeKalb, Illinois, there is a public research institution called Northern Illinois University (NIU). On May 22, 1895, Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld established it as Northern Illinois State Normal School as a part of the state's expansion of its system for training college-educated teachers. It also has satellite campuses in Chicago, Naperville, Rockford, and Oregon, Illinois, in addition to its flagship campus in DeKalb. The institution comprises seven colleges that award degrees, a student body of 25,000, and more than 240,000 alumni. NIU is one of just two public universities in Illinois that participates in Division I competition of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Huskies, the university's athletic teams, participate in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
