Profile Evaluation for MS in the UK
Students these days are increasingly choosing the UK for their master’s degree. There are several reasons for studying in the UK. The universities are world-renowned. They are respected all over the world. The UK is a multicultural country, and very popular with international students. The country has amazing work opportunities for students even when they are pursuing their degrees. The government of the UK has also introduced a post-study visa which allows students to stay back in the country and work for two years post their graduation. Another benefit is that a degree in the UK takes less time to complete as compared to other countries. Various scholarships grant aid to students.
Work Experience
Work experience is something that adds on and carries some weight apart from GPA or GRE score. All MS students don't need to have some kind of work experience, however, it is more important in case the student is pursuing a management-related degree.
Bachelor’s Percentage or GPA
To be considered for a master’s degree in the UK, a student should hold an overall GPA of 3.25/4 or better in his bachelor’s degree. A minimum GPA of 3 is required to get into universities for a master's degree.
Curriculum Vitae
Curriculum Vitae or a CV can be defined as a written summary of the candidate’s past education, achievements, and personal details like the address. A CV is applicable in certain universities. So going through the requirements of documents of each university is very important before applying to it.
IELTS and TOEFL
IELTS and TOEFL are the English proficiency tests that are accepted by all the universities in the UK. They are not mandatory in certain universities like Robert Gordon University, Swansea University, University of Bristol, and various others. The average TOEFL score for the universities in the UK is 80- 90.
Statement Of Purpose
SOP, or a statement of purpose is a mandatory criterion while applying to universities and colleges in the UK. An SOP states the purpose of you applying to a certain university, for a certain course.
Letter Of Recommendation
Two LORs or letters of recommendation are required to be submitted to almost all of the top universities in the UK. An LOR gives a clearer idea to the university about your various achievements and experiences, because it is written by the recommender who has seen you achieve those things. This makes your profile stronger.
GRE/ GMAT
Most of the universities in the UK do not require GRE or GMAT scores to evaluate your profile. These tests are not a part of the entry requirements for pursuing a master's degree in the UK. However, a good score on either of the tests is an add-on to your profile.
Research Paper
Adding research experience to your SOP only makes it look more attractive, and puts your application on top of your competitors who also wish to get admission in that particular university.
Extracurricular Activities
To have done any kind of extracurricular activity is not mandatory for applying to universities in the UK. It depends from one course to another. For example, when applying for a medical course, the activity should more preferably be related to working in the hospital. Whereas, if a math course is taken, doing any kind of extracurricular activity is not required.
Class X And XII Grades
To pursue your master’s degree in the UK, class X, and XII grades are not as important as your last examination’s grades, that is your graduation merit. However, achieving a good score in your 10th and 12th grades only shows that you are consistent and take your education seriously.
