Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships
Ph.D. Scholarships from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation are awarded to outstanding doctoral candidates who are enrolled or intend to enroll in a social sciences or humanities program at a Canadian institution.
- The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships programme gives a total of 20 prizes each year.
- The amount of 40,000 CAD is given to each recipient to cover education fees and living expenses.
- Students must submit their applications through the application portal of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
- Departments within the institutes will then recommend candidates for consideration.
- The scholarship recipients will engage in a community retreat, cooperate and present at conferences, and collaborate with other scholars and mentors on creative projects as part of their award.
The University of Ottawa, the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo, the University of Alberta, and other institutions are among those that have formed partnerships with the Pierre-Elliott Trudeau Foundation.
#ELIGIBILITY
Candidates for Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships must meet the qualifying standards mentioned below to be considered for the awards.
- Canadian students are eligible whether at Canadian or international institutions.
- Doctoral research should relate to at least one of the Foundation’s four central themes:
- People and their Natural Environment
- Human Rights and Dignity
- Canada and the World,
- Responsible Citizenship,
- Must be already enrolled in years 1,2 or 3 of the full-time doctoral program at Canadian Universities.
- field of study: humanities or social sciences.
- International students enrolled in doctoral programs at Canadian institutions only.

#APPLICATION PROCESS
To be considered for this scholarship, students must first create an account on the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation's application portal to get a username and password.

It is still possible to use an account from a previous scholarship competition; simply log in with your existing login credentials or request to reset the password.

Once logged in, complete the application form in the "Draft" area of the Trudeau portal by following the on-screen instructions.

Additionally, submit letters of recommendation and academic transcripts with verified translations.
It is recommended that you submit your application as soon as feasible and that you collaborate with your appropriate departments for any changes or additions.
#SELECTION PROCESS
Once applications have been filed, they cannot be withdrawn. Departments will submit one student per department (with a maximum of four students per university) to the selection committee, which will then make its final decision. The following will serve as the basis for determining the evaluation criteria for the same:
- Originality and audacity
- Academic excellence
- Interest in the scientific theme of the 2020-2023 cycle: Technology and ethics.
- Should be willing to engage with this theme as part of a leadership training program.
- Desire to belong to a vibrant community made up of leaders from across sectors
- Thematic relevance of research to the Foundation’s central themes
- Community Engagement
- Leadership experience and abilities
- Willingness to contribute to public dialogue and knowledge dissemination
- Communication skills.
The applications of the nominated students will be reviewed by a selection committee at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation in Ottawa.
Finally, finalists for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships will be invited to participate in interviews with members of the selection panel.
#GRANT DETAILS
PhD Scholarships from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation are offered to both Canadian and international students who are pursuing their doctoral studies in Canada at a variety of academic institutions.
The following benefits will be provided to those who qualify:
- For three years, you can get up to 40,000 CAD per year to pay tuition and appropriate living expenses.
- As a research and travel allowance, up to 20,000 CAD per year for three years is available.
Scholars from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation will:
- During the first year of their term, they will participate in a community retreat in Moncton, New Brunswick, as well as two Institutes of Engaged Leadership.
- The Institute's original location is in Montreal, Quebec.
- Helsinki is home to the second institute (Finland)
- During the second year of their term, they should collaborate on and participate in a conference event.
- During the third year of their term, they will collaborate with other researchers, mentors, and fellows on a creative project.
