A technical institute in the center of Loughborough was established in 1909 that offered courses in subjects like Science and Art. The university was awarded its charter in April 1966. It was the country's first technological university and was renamed Loughborough University in 1996. It is now a 440-acre asset. It opened its second campus in 2015 on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.
