GLOBAL STUDENT APPLICATIONS TO AMERICAN SCHOOLS REBOUNDING. BIDEN EFFECT?

It is time for American colleges and universities to celebrate rising applications from international students. The figures starting 2021, suggest foreign students’ willingness to enroll in American schools for MS, MBA, Bachelor’s, and Ph.D. programs. After 3 years of a falling curve of international applicants, American universities can now expect a rebound of global applications. Education leaders and speculators have already linked the surge in numbers to one of the earliest positive impacts of Biden’s presidency. Tufts University, Boston University, University of California, and New York University are some of the universities amongst the institutions that witnessed an increased inflow of foreign applicants. Some others names are Middlebury, Colgate, Swarthmore, Rice, etc.

The interest to study in the USA is represented majorly by students from Pakistan, Nigeria, United Kingdom, India, Canada, and Brazil. The highest spike in figures (41%) comes from Brazilian potential candidates. Chinese applications however reduced by around 18% which accounts for a significant loss. It is noteworthy that the Common App depicts a more detailed rather complicated picture of the situation with data for overall applications, unique applicants, first-generation applications, etc. This has raised some concerns regarding the access to students against different admission criteria.

Before Trump’s term began in 2017, for over 2 decades schools and colleges in the USA enjoyed consistent growth in the number of international students. However, owing to the restrictive policies related to travel, visa, immigration, financial aid, declared under the administration of then-president Donald Trump, the momentum of applications was lost substantially.

U.S. Universities and schools currently are leaving no stone unturned to explore the international student market in the best possible ways. Also, Joe Biden’s newly introduced immigration bill (U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021) will soon decide the fate of the education and research institutions in the USA. We shall focus on the fact, that within the first few weeks of the new presidency, the scenario looks tremendously hopeful for both the educational sector in the USA and the prospective students dreaming to study and live in the United States.
