CAN I STUDY FOR FREE IN SWEDEN? WHAT IS THE COST?

Sweden is a Nordic country which is located in the Northern part of Europe. Sweden is a country that has an excellent education system which is more focussed on individual and group studies rather than lectures. The Swedish universities pique the curiosity of their students and often encourage them to learn much more in-depth about the subject than what is written in the reference books. Discipline, Consistency, and Curiosity are the key values that support the development of students.

Sweden is a part of the European Economic Area (EEA) and comes under the European Union (EU) it has made higher education extremely affordable and technically free for all the students coming, having citizenship and internationals who have become a permanent resident of EEA/EU countries for their Bachelors and Masters degrees and Ph.D. courses are free for all students regardless of their nationality, unfortunately, that is all that is provided free to international students seeking to study here and yet it is a popular destination to study in for international students. The international students have to pay admission and tuition fees in almost every University in Sweden. Sweden has many private and public Universities. The Swedish Public Universities are funded by the government and hence can provide education at affordable rates without much compromise. The tuition fees are essentially free if you are an EEA/EU citizen. Private universities unlike public universities charge a large amount as an education fee which also helps them maintain their infrastructure and their quality of education. The public Universities do not provide free education but as a positive, the quality of the education still stays undiluted and its quality remains impeccable. International students especially those who are from Asian countries will experience that the study atmosphere here is not stressful as one can take their exams as many times as they like or till they get good grades. When compared to one another, the quality of education and learning experience is somewhat similar. The fees per annum for the universities here are between 8000 Euros to 30,000 Euros on average depending on the university and course of your choice, Business and Architecture courses are particularly expensive as they are a popular choice among students. Most international students choose Swedish public universities because of the low cost some of which are frankly a very good deal. The student life as mentioned before is very tranquil. The students here are very welcoming, respect individuality, and accept all people regardless of nationality.

Whether you go to a public or private university, one should remember that the student admission criteria in a Swedish university are very minimal. To get into a Swedish university, one has to keep a GPA of more than 3.5 or more depending on some of the courses and have overall good performance in the previous degree you did. Tests such as the GRE or GMAT are essential for admission here as they are required for some specific courses. Tests such as the ones mentioned above play a very important role in deciding whether a student has learned the basics well and is ready to face the academic challenges lying ahead. You will also need proof of your proficiency in the English language equivalent to an English 6/English B course. Lastly, you will need certain documents such as your civil liability certificate, a copy of your European health card, proof of funds, valid identification, previous University record, etc.

The cost of living for students in Sweden is around 550 to 1200 Euros per month on average. Prices differ significantly while moving between the large cities of Sweden, for example, you would need more money to live and study in Stockholm than you would in Uppsala. As a general rule, you can live on less money in smaller cities than in larger ones. The best option for most students is to live in a student hall of residence or share an apartment with other students. The cost of living on campus is very affordable and is around 240 to 600 Euros. Living in a dormitory is a great way to mingle and make friends. On the other hand, having one’s apartment can get quite expensive due to the country’s high living standards. This is also a great way to reduce your expenses and be secure, especially if it’s your first time living abroad.

Every student dreams of studying at a good University and Sweden truly provides students with top-class education at an affordable cost. Business, International Economics, Architecture, Creative Arts, etc are courses with great specialization in Sweden. Swedish Universities as mentioned before heavily emphasize individual learning so it is a given that a graduate from any university in Sweden will learn something more than what is given in the books giving him/her an edge over other students.

In conclusion, Sweden is a great place to study and has the potential to be of the leading countries in terms of education.
