How are PTE scores calculated?

The PTE score reflects the candidate’s overall English language efficiency. The score is based on the candidate’s performance in all sections included in the test. The PTE score ranges between 10-90 points. Scores for communicative skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking) are based on all test items that evaluate these skills, either as a single skill or together with other skills. The score for each skill is calculated in the range of 10-90 points. There are 20 different items and each test taker will answer around 71 to 83 questions in any test. Each test taker will answer between 71 and 83 items in any given test and there are 20 different question types. PTE measures the ability of a candidate to use English in professional or academic settings.

The scores of the test takers vary to a certain degree called which is the ‘score variance’. The purpose of PTE is to test the true variance amongst students. However, questions being subjective in nature, measurement of the scores have a scope for error. The extent to which the score variance is because of the error is known as the error of measurement. It is an important component considered while calculating the PTE scores.
