In the wake of the Second World War, the city of Berlin was divided into four parts controlled by the Allies. The oldest university in Berlin was located in the Soviet part of the city. As political tension rose and academic freedom was becoming more and more restricted under Soviet control, students and intellectuals began to look for alternatives. With the help of the American sector as well as influential Berlin citizens, in December 1948, the Free University of Berlin officially opened its doors in the southwest borough of Dahlem. The name “Free University” was chosen to emphasize the university’s dedication to academic freedom and to contrast it to the restrictive environment that existed at the university. The fundamental goal of the university was to create an environment where freedom of thought, free speech, and scientific research could flourish without political interference.
