This is a public research institution located in Doha. Established in 1973 as the College of Education, it is the sole government-run university in the country. To date, it is also the only Qatari institution to have registered in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It is believed to be the best university in Qatar for international students. It is segregated into various streams - College of Education, Engineering, Law, Pharmacy, Arts & Sciences, Business & Economics, Sharia & Islamic Studies, Medicine and Health Science. Programs in Education, Social Science, and the Arts are taught in the Arabic language. Business and Engineering programs though are carried out in English.

Over 3,000 international students, mostly the children of expatriates, hail from over 50 different countries. Female students, which make up almost 70% of the entire student population, a study in separate classrooms and facilities.

1. Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar

This is located in Doha’s Education City. Instituted in 2001, this private medical school was created under the agreement between Cornell University – Weill Cornell Medical College in New York and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development. It is the first co-ed institute in Qatar and offers a six-year Medical program intended for high school graduates. Students with bachelor’s degrees, on the other hand, can sign up for the  four-year Medicine program. Students can finish their clinical rotations at the General Hospital and Women’s Hospital. After graduating, these aspiring physicians have conferred a prestigious Doctor of Medicine diploma from Cornell University.

2. Hamad Bin Khalifa University

This is a public research university situated in Doha’s renowned Education City. Established in 2010, it is named after former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The bulk of the students comprise of foreign nationals coming from over 50 countries. The university primarily offers graduate programs in Islamic Studies, Humanities & Social Science, Law, Health & Life Sciences, Science & Engineering, and Public Policy.

It houses three national research institutes that specialize in Environment & Energy Research, Biomedical Research, and Computing research. All student scholarship programs are funded by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development.

3. Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar

It is an international division of Carnegie Mellon University. Established in 2004, it was the fourth American university to start operations in Doha’s Education City. It offers numerous courses in Biological Science, Business Administration, Computational Biology, Computer Science, and Information Systems. These programs are akin to those provided in its Pennsylvania campus. 

4. Texas A&M University at Qatar

This is a branch of another international organization located in Doha’s Education City. Established in 2003, it is the middle eastern branch of College Station’s Texas A&M University. The university follows the exact admission standards as its American equivalent. The school provides Bachelor’s degrees in Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Science. There is also an Engineering Honours program with a specialization in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, and Petroleum Engineering. The University strives to emulate the American curriculum as closely as possible.

5. Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts 

This is the first international campus which opened in Doha’s Education City in 1998, a branch of the VCU School of the Arts, from Richmond, Virginia. The University offers a Bachelor’s program in Fine Arts degree with a specialization in Painting & Printmaking, Interior Design, Graphic Design, and Fashion Design. It also has a Bachelor’s degree in Art History and a Master’s degree in Design. It leans more toward the visual arts, although it also offers Liberal Arts & Sciences courses, including Behavioural/Social Science, Mathematics, Focused Inquiry, Natural/Physical Sciences, English & Literature.

6. Northwestern University in Qatar

It was founded in 2008, in Education City, Doha. The international branch of the Illinois-based university, it extends programs that are affiliated with the curriculums of the American campus. The degree in Communication, which is based on the School of Communication’s program, offers a major in Media Industries & Technologies, where qualified students can apply for a 1-week engagement in NU’s Evanston campus. The same model also applies to its Journalism course, which is based on the program of NU’s Medill School of Journalism. Liberal arts courses, replicate the programs of Northwestern’s Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences.

7. College of the North Atlantic – Qatar

This College opened in 2002 and is the international branch of CNA. It is one of the largest skills and academic training centers in Canada and commands 17 campuses all over the region. CNA Qatar was set up to offer hands-on training in numerous streams of study. As a top university in Qatar for international students, it offers a wide variety of courses through its three schools. The School of Business Management & Information Technology offers programs in Applied Business Administration (Accounting, HR, Marketing) and Information Technology (Hardware, Network Systems, App Development). The School of Engineering, Technology, and Industrial Trades supervise programs related to Chemical Processing, Process Automation, Telecommunications & Network, Electrical Power Systems, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, and Maintenance Engineering Technology. The School of Health Sciences offers programs in the fields of Environmental Health, Pharmacy Tech, Health Education, Para-medicine, Medical Radiography, Dental Hygiene, Occupational Health, Respiratory Therapy, and Applied Science.

8. Georgetown University in Qatar

It is another international University branch based in Doha’s Education City. Established in 2005, the former Foreign Service school continues to offer a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Service. The programs offered include Culture & Politics, International Economics, International History, and International Politics. The university also has certificate programs in American Studies, Arab & Regional Studies, and Media & Politics.
