Graduate Records Examination (GRE), is an examination required to obtain admission into graduate programs in the USA. In 1936, it was initiated by the Carnegie Foundation. The GRE is conducted by (ETS) Educational Testing Service. GRE assesses the test taker’s critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning abilities. The main purpose of the GRE is to know the candidate’s efficiency in the said category of skill sets.
GRE should be taken by students who want to study a graduate or post-graduate (doctoral) program in the USA. It is also mandatory in a few colleges in Canada and Germany.
To be eligible for the GRE, one should complete a 10 + 2 + 3 or 4 years of basic education or a recognized graduate degree.
GRE has few sections that can be described as moderately difficult but usually, it is possible to obtain good scores with proper preparation.
The GRE General Test has three main segments:
- Analytical Writing
- Verbal Reasoning
- Quantitative Reasoning
GRE is a computer-based test that is conducted in the centers in the USA and in most other countries.
- The first segment is ‘Analytical Writing’. Candidates have to select 1 topic out of 2 given topics and write a comprehensive essay on that topic. The analytical segment has 1 section with 2 separately timed tasks.
- In the ‘Verbal Reasoning’ segment, there are 3 types of questions:
- Sentence equivalence
- Text completion
- Reading comprehension.

There are 2 sections in this segment with approximately 20 questions in each section.
- In the ‘Quantitative Reasoning’ segment, there are 2 sections with almost 20 questions each. These are multiple-choice questions focused on ‘quantitative comparisons’ and ‘problem-solving’. This segment also contains a few ‘numeric entry’ questions. An on-screen calculator is provided for this segment.
- Also, there is an anonymous segment.
- A student can prepare for the GRE in 3 months with full-time studies. To avoid last-minute panic, it is advisable to prepare for the GRE in advance. A few suggestions for a successful attempt are
- To take lots of sample tests
- Learn short-cut methods for problem-solving
- Sufficient practice of the test syllabus.
- Students can take the GRE once in every 21 days, and up to five times within a continuous 12-month or 365-day period. The GRE score is available in your ETS (Educational Testing Services) account approximately 10–15 days from the date of your GRE test. The score is active for 5 years from the date of the test.
The computerized GRE test is conducted for three hours and 45 minutes.
